As I watch Shawn’s story I cannot help but think of the disclaimer on the header of InvisiblePeople.tv. Shawn is homeless in Denver. He uses ‘colorful’ language that may offend some people. He is also high on heroin, and that may upset a few more.

What you need to see is a hurting young man who has grown up on the streets. Shawn has lived a hard life. Both parents were heavy drugs users so Shawn was placed in a group home at 12. He went back to his mother around 16, yet she continued to use drugs so Shawn hit the streets.

Shawn tells a very real story of life on the streets, and how the breakdown of family causes so much destruction.

I hope Shawn’s story did make you mad – mad enough to fight homelessness.

I hope the guy who offered him a place to stay was legitimately looking out for him. If he was well meaning, then that is exactly the type of person we need more of. We don't need anymore weirdos, though.

This is where “help” becomes problematic. The guy offering him to go back to his place COULD have been legitimate, and it COULD have really helped this guy out. But there IS “the other hand”. Sad, really. I fell on hard times when I was 19 and first moved to Los Angeles. I had car issues, and through that, the mechanic offered my GF and I a place to stay when we desperately needed it. It turned out to be one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and saved our asses. Or we could have been raped and murdered. Flip of the coin? Not so much. People generally have good intentions. You should be able to read them SOMEWHAT.

However, this guy is an admitted heroin addict, and the guy HAD to have known that something was up with the kid. Did he want to clean him up, or exploit him? Who knows, because this guy decided to not go with him. Maybe he got a weird vibe…or maybe he has no desire to change his life.

It shouldn’t matter how you get there. Circumstantial, bad decisions, addictions, mental disorders, etc… Society put you there. Society needs to find solutions to fix it. This is an ongoing and growing problem in the US. As a society we are torturing these poor people. Willingly.
