Shanni and her children

Shanni and her children live in a homeless shelter in Salt Lake City, Utah. She says the shelter is scary. They mix single men and women with the families. Although separated by dividers, the children witness drug use and worse.

Shanni shared she felt safer on the streets than she did living with the children’s father, which is how they ended up homeless.

At the time of this interview, Shanni was looking for work. She said she has a computer, she just didn’t have a home.

I still don’t understand how could this happen. So sad she has no friends or relatives who can help her. Seems like they should have a shelter just for families. How is it that they don’t have a place like that?

Best way is to support the homeless services in your area that are actually housing people and ending homelessness.

I work with the homeless every day in Salt Lake City, the Road Home shelter is just one option for too many people, the VOA, LDS Church, The Mission, Weigand Homeless Resource Center, Valley Behavioral Health, VA for Homeless Veterans, Salt Lake City tries as hard as possible to keep people safe on the streets.

Actually, the Road Home in Salt Lake City has a family center located about ten miles south of its downtown facility. It provides shelter and services to 300 people and is exclusively for families with children.
