Urge Congress to Prevent Evictions By Creating a Permanent Emergency Rental Assistance Fund

Now is the time to urge your legislators to support the bipartisan Eviction Crisis Act (S.2182), which would create new tools to address the nation’s ongoing eviction epidemic.

Millions of low-income families who rent and spend at least half of their incomes on housing have virtually no margin for unexpected expenses, such as broken-down cars or unreimbursed medical bills. These financial shocks can quickly lead to housing instability, eviction, and even homelessness.

The Eviction Crisis Act (S.2182), introduced by Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Rob Portman (R-OH), along with Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Todd Young (R-IN), provides an innovative approach to increasing housing stability by creating a permanent emergency rental assistance fund. This fund would help families absorb an economic shock before it causes housing instability and homelessness, which often require more prolonged, extensive, and expensive housing assistance.

This legislation would also:
• improve data and analysis on evictions by creating a national database to better inform policy decisions
• reduce preventable evictions and mitigate the consequences of unavoidable evictions
• improve information on tenant screening reports

The Eviction Crisis Act would tackle the devastating impacts of evictions on individuals and families and create a foundation for effective prevention in the future. Your voice can help fight evictions. Tell your legislators to support this legislation, sign on as a cosponsor, and work with their colleagues to enact it.
